Mammut: A mall that practices social responsibility?

Mammut II

Located at the crossroads of three Buda districts, just next to central Buda’s busiest squares, Moszkva tér and Széna tér. Zsolt and I like to go there for subway sandwiches and one of our favourite is the Greek Restaurant on the third floor of Mammut I. We both love the authentic greek gyros.

To many foreigners, the obvious from the outside of this mall is the 1956 monument in front of the shopping centre. There is also the “Martyr” monument. I am always happy to know that a mall being so rich but practices social responsibility. For example, Mammut supports a foundation for the Future of the Homeless, which aims to improve the living conditions of the homeless in the district. It started the first daytime shelter for the homeless in the Second District was opened in January 2005. Such acts of social responsibilities are seldom seen in malls but at Mammut. You can see several evidences of the effort taken towards the social support such as a rehabilitation programme of Retek Street, Fény Street and Lövőház Street.

There are several reasons why we visit the Mammut other than shopping of daily essentials. Usually after dinner, we go for movies there because of the availability of English subtitled movies (MOM Park is the other mall that is frequented for the movies with English Substitles.) The cinema ticket in the shopping malls in budapest usually entitles the bearer to 3 hours of free parking following validation of the parking ticket at the cinema’s box office.

Mammut Parking:
The parking charge is 200 HUF per hour.
Each new 30 minute increment costs 100 HUF.

How to get there :
From Pest
Via No. 2 metro line or the No. 4 and 6 trams;

From the Buda Castle, it is an easy walk or a short bus ride to Mammut. It is accessible by car in various ways. From the Buda districts, take Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor, or Krisztina körút from the railway station Déli pályaudvar. From Pest, cross Margit híd, and drive down Margit körút to get to Mammut.
